ricket is a ball game played on a field with the rough dimensions of 155 x 135 meters by two teams of eleven players. In the center of the field is the pitch. That is a very well-prepared piece of the field, basically devoid of grass and rolled into an almost rock-hard surface. Depending on where you are in the world (and who is playing for your team), it can be prepared to help the fast bowlers (more bounce) or the spin bowlers (more turn).

The batting team (in pairs) tries to score as many runs as possible by hitting the ball bowled (not thrown) by the bowler and then running between the two sets of stumps (three upright, half-size broomsticks with two bails balanced on top) at either end of the pitch.
